Quantic Dream is ending Spellcasters Chronicles only a few months after the multiplayer game arrived in early access. Servers will stay online until June 19, 2026, then the studio plans to shut the game down.
The closure means development is also being discontinued. Quantic Dream said players who spent money during the early access period will be eligible for a full refund on request, a cleaner exit than many paid or free-to-play live-service closures manage.
Spellcasters Chronicles was a strange turn for the studio best known for Heavy Rain, Beyond: Two Souls and Detroit: Become Human. Its Steam page describes a free-to-play, team-based third-person action-strategy game inspired by MOBAs, with 3v3 battles, flying mage commanders, creature summons and more than 50 spells and summons to build decks around. Steam lists its early access release date as February 26, 2026.
The player count never appears to have reached the scale Quantic Dream needed. SteamDB data cited by IGN put Spellcasters Chronicles at a launch peak of 888 concurrent players, with a recent 24-hour peak of 54.
Quantic Dream told IGN the game "has not reached a sufficient audience to ensure its long-term sustainability," adding that it had decided to discontinue development and refocus on other projects.
"This decision reflects a disciplined and responsible approach in light of current market conditions. It in no way diminishes the remarkable work accomplished by the teams involved. Their talent, creativity, and dedication have been essential in bringing this ambitious project to life, and we are proud of what has been achieved together."
The studio also confirmed an internal reorganization. According to IGN, Quantic Dream said it could not share the number of staff affected yet because consultation had only just begun under the French legal process. The studio said it would prioritize internal reassignments where possible.
Quantic Dream also moved to separate Spellcasters Chronicles from its larger licensed project. The studio said development of Star Wars Eclipse is not affected and continues as planned. Quantic Dream's official page still describes Star Wars Eclipse as an action-adventure game set in the High Republic era, with multiple playable characters and branching choices, but it does not list a release window.
Spellcasters Chronicles now joins a growing list of multiplayer games that have struggled to turn a launch window into a lasting audience. For anyone who did try Quantic Dream's brief live-service experiment, June 19 is the final date to play before the servers go dark.
