Riot Games is preparing to say more about what looks like a throwback version of League of Legends. A new official League of Legends dev update teases "League Classic," with Riot pointing players toward the MSI Finals on July 11 for the next reveal.
The video is framed as a comedy skit with League of Legends executive producer Paul "Pabro" Bellezza and League Studio head Andrei "Meddler" van Roon talking through the MOBA's old days. Riot has not laid out rules, champion availability, client details or a release plan yet, so the teaser should be treated as an announcement of more information rather than a full mode reveal.
The nostalgia hook is clear from the references Riot chose. The skit nods to Heart of Gold, one of League's older items, and the original 40-champion beta roster, both of which point toward a version of the game built around an earlier era rather than another standard limited-time ruleset.
That is why the teaser will draw immediate comparisons to classic server projects in other live-service games, especially World of Warcraft Classic. League of Legends has changed dramatically since its 2009 launch, from champions and items to map flow and balance philosophy, so even a narrow legacy mode could feel very different from the current game.
Riot's own description says to "tune in to MSI Finals on July 11 at 11pm PDT for more." Until then, the big unanswered details are how far back League Classic goes, whether it will be temporary or permanent and how Riot plans to handle balance in a game where old versions are remembered as much for their chaos as their nostalgia.
