R-Type Dimensions III will launch for Xbox Series X|S on May 19, giving Xbox players a new version of one of the series' classic side-scrolling shooters.

The release was confirmed in an official Xbox announcement, with digital pre-orders now live through the Xbox Store. The store page lists KK3 as developer, ININ Games as publisher and shooter as the genre.

R-Type Dimensions III is described as a ground-up remake of R-Type III: The Third Lightning, the SNES entry that sent players back against the Bydo Empire in the R-90 Ragnarok. The new version keeps the series' biomechanical enemy designs and tactical Force pod play, while updating the game for modern hardware.

ININ Games says the remake is being developed through a collaboration involving ININ, Irem and Tozai Games. Irem's connection is especially important for long-time shmup fans, as the studio created the R-Type series and helped define its mix of precision shooting, memorization and grotesque sci-fi art.

The Xbox version will include a Retro 2.0 mode, two-player co-op, stage selection that tracks progress and the option to switch between original and updated visuals. Players will also be able to choose between the classic score and a newly recorded soundtrack.

That gives Dimensions III a clear pitch beyond simple preservation. It is still being sold as a faithful return to R-Type III, but the added co-op and quality-of-life features should make the remake easier to approach for players who did not grow up with 16-bit arcade difficulty.

R-Type Dimensions III is due on Xbox Series X|S on May 19, 2026.
