Pokemon GO's long-awaited Mega Mewtwo raids have arrived with a new co-op mechanic that is hard to miss in public. During Mega Mewtwo Super Mega Raids, players can charge a Unity Attack by raising their phones alongside other Trainers, turning the battle into a more visible group moment than a normal raid lobby.

The mechanic is appearing as Pokemon GO Fest 2026 begins its real-world event run in Tokyo, where Mega Mewtwo X and Mega Mewtwo Y are now part of Super Mega Raids. Those raids are the first way for players to start earning Mega Mewtwo X Energy and Mega Mewtwo Y Energy before the feature expands more widely through GO Fest 2026: Global in July.

Unity Attacks make Mega Mewtwo raids more physical

Unity Attacks trigger late in the fight, when the opposing Pokemon is at low health. Players then work together to charge a stronger shared attack, with the phone-raising prompt making the raid feel closer to an in-person crowd action than a typical tap-heavy Pokemon GO battle.

That fits the broader design of Super Mega Raids, which Niantic has been positioning as a more coordinated version of Mega Raids. The official Mega Evolution update says Super Mega Raids are intended for groups of at least seven Trainers and can include shield phases that require multiple players to break through an enraged Mega-Evolved Pokemon's defenses.

The new Unity Attack wrinkle may be a small mechanical step, but it changes the social texture of the raid. Pokemon GO has always pushed players into parks, gyms and local meetups, and this asks a group to make that cooperation visible in the moment. It also explains why some players may find the prompt awkward, especially in a busy public space.

Mega Mewtwo rolls from Tokyo to Global GO Fest

Niantic's official Mega Mewtwo GO Fest post confirms that Mega Mewtwo X and Mega Mewtwo Y are making their Pokemon GO debuts during GO Fest 2026. Mewtwo can now Mega Evolve into either form, but each form uses its own rare Mega Energy.

Ticketed in-person GO Fest attendees in Tokyo, Chicago and Copenhagen get the earliest access. During the City Experience, eligible players can earn an encounter with either Mega Mewtwo X or Mega Mewtwo Y after completing at least two Trainer Challenges. Park Session attendees are also being invited into large Super Mega Raids near the end of their session, with Niantic saying more than one thousand Trainers can take on Mega Mewtwo together through new event Gyms.

The global rollout starts during Pokemon GO Fest 2026: Global, which runs July 11 and July 12 from 10:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. local time each day. Niantic says the event is free for logged-in players this year and includes Special Research for Zeraora, increased Shiny odds, up to nine free Raid Passes per day and Global Challenges that can unlock additional bonuses.

Mega Mewtwo also ties into Pokemon GO's wider 2026 Mega Evolution changes. Earlier this season, datamined and scheduled event details pointed to a huge GO Fest raid schedule, but the live Tokyo event is now showing how one of its headline raids actually plays. If Unity Attacks stay attached to Super Mega Raids beyond Mewtwo, future Mega battles may demand a little more public commitment from the Trainers standing around the Gym.
