Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun 2 is widening its grimdark shooting gallery with enemies from all four Chaos god factions, along with allied Death Korps of Krieg troops that will fight beside the player in several levels.
Auroch Digital detailed the new additions in an official PlayStation Blog post, where lead designer Matt Bone and lead artist Mark Chambers broke down several of the sequel's enemy reveals. The studio says Boltgun 2 will include Nurgle, Tzeentch, Khorne and Slaanesh forces, plus returning Black Legion enemies.
The first Boltgun leaned into retro shooter pacing inside the Warhammer 40,000 universe. The sequel is pushing that further with more enemies, weapons, worlds and a new character, while still focusing on fast combat against swarms of corrupted targets.
Chaos factions get distinct battlefield roles
Slaanesh will be represented by Daemonettes, which Auroch describes as evasive, disorienting attackers. Bone said they can leap in wide arcs, rapidly close distance with a zigzagging phase attack and trigger a special screen effect when they get close enough to claw at the player.
Khorne's Bloodcrusher adds the sequel's first mounted unit. The Bloodletter rider can jump off its Juggernaut mount during a fight, splitting one threat into two enemies. The Juggernaut can also consume nearby corpses to regain health, including its former rider.
Nurgle's lineup includes Plague Marines and Blightlord Terminators. The Terminators are designed around area denial, using blight grenades and corrupt flail attacks that leave hazardous zones on the battlefield.
Tzeentch brings Rubric Marines and Scarab Occult Terminators, with one Terminator variant carrying a Hellfyre Missile Rack. Bone said the faction is focused on bullet-hell pressure, with the missiles turning fights into a heavier dodging challenge.
Death Korps of Krieg join the fight
The biggest non-Chaos reveal is the Death Korps of Krieg, who will appear as allied units for the first time in Boltgun 2. Auroch says the Astra Militarum troopers will fight alongside the player in several levels, although the studio hints their survival odds will fit the setting's usual bleak tone.
Chambers said the team studied the miniatures closely while translating the Krieg soldiers into sprite form, including their lasguns, gas masks and trench coats.
Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun 2 is planned to release later this year on PlayStation 5. Auroch Digital has not shared a specific release date in this update.
