Total War: Warhammer 3 is getting a fresh Steam lift as Creative Assembly gives players several reasons to return at once: a new Bhashiva Character Pack, update 8.0 and a free weekend.
In Gamers Now's 17:50 UTC reading of Steam's public most-played chart on May 21, Total War: Warhammer 3 ranked No. 74 with 30,738 players in-game. The latest weekly comparison put it five places higher than last week, while the most recent weekly rollup listed a 27,796-player peak before Thursday's evening count moved past that mark. The previous day's comparable reading had the strategy game at 18,685 players.
The chart move lands on the same day Creative Assembly launched the Bhashiva Character Pack and update 8.0 on Steam. The DLC adds Bhashiva, the White Tiger of Shang-Yang, as a playable Legendary Lord for Grand Cathay, alongside Tiger Warrior units and new campaign systems built around the Armies of Shang-Yang and the Tiger Court.
Bhashiva gives Grand Cathay a new Steam hook
Total War: Warhammer 3 is a 2022 strategy game from Creative Assembly and Sega, mixing turn-based campaign management with real-time fantasy battles across Games Workshop's Warhammer setting. On its Steam store page, the game is pitched around the Realm of Chaos campaign, multiple playable races and larger multiplayer campaigns.
Bhashiva is a narrower but clearer reason for returning players to open the game this week. The DLC store page lists a May 21 release and describes the pack as a Grand Cathay addition focused on Bhashiva, mercenary Tiger Warriors, Iron Favour, Relics and faction-shaping Oaths.

Update 8.0 widens that appeal beyond paid DLC buyers. Creative Assembly's notes detail a full Cathayan technology overhaul, revised provincial commandments, Ivory Road additions, new skill-tree work for the Gate Master, Alchemist and Astromancer, plus a long list of campaign, battle, UI and unit fixes. That gives existing owners something to check even if they are not buying Bhashiva immediately.
The free weekend opens the door wider
The other piece of the Steam bump is access. Creative Assembly also announced a Total War: Warhammer 3 free weekend running from May 21 until May 25, with an 85% Skulls sale discount listed through May 28.
That lines up with a broader Warhammer push this week. Gamers Now covered how Warhammer Skulls 2026 brought several new reveals, including the Bhashiva Character Pack as part of a wider slate of Warhammer game updates and announcements.
A free weekend can pull in curious strategy players, while the Bhashiva launch gives existing Grand Cathay players a more specific reason to return. Together, they make Total War: Warhammer 3's Steam climb easier to explain than a routine top-100 shuffle: the game has fresh paid content, a substantial free update and temporary no-cost access all landing in the same window.
