Xbox is making sure Game Pass subscribers do not expect Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 to appear in their library on day one. According to reports from IGN and Insider Gaming, Xbox app notifications tell members that Modern Warfare 4 will not be available through Game Pass at launch and that Game Pass availability starts in Holiday 2027.
The reminder lines up with Microsoft's wider Game Pass change from April. In an Xbox Wire update, Microsoft said future Call of Duty games will no longer join Game Pass Ultimate or PC Game Pass at launch. Instead, new entries will be added during the following holiday season, roughly a year after release, while existing Call of Duty games already in the catalog will stay there.
That makes Modern Warfare 4 the first mainline Call of Duty release after the policy shift, so anyone who wants to play on the October 23 launch date will need to buy the game separately. The official Xbox game page now says Modern Warfare 4 is "not available with Game Pass at Launch."
The tradeoff is tied to Xbox's latest Game Pass pricing move. Microsoft dropped Game Pass Ultimate from $29.99 to $22.99 per month and PC Game Pass from $16.49 to $13.99 per month, with prices varying by region. As part of that change, Call of Duty moved out of the day-one subscription lane, even though other first-party Xbox releases are still scheduled to launch into the service.
For Call of Duty players, the timing is awkward. A Holiday 2027 Game Pass arrival would put Modern Warfare 4 into the service around the time the series would usually be preparing its next annual release, meaning subscribers who wait could be a full cycle behind the most active multiplayer population.
Modern Warfare 4 is also a cleaner generational break than recent entries. Activision's announcement says the game is coming to Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, PC and Nintendo Switch 2, with no PlayStation 4 or Xbox One version. The game includes a campaign centered on a conflict on the Korean Peninsula, multiplayer with 12 new 6v6 maps at launch and DMZ as an extraction-focused mode. Preorders also include campaign early access starting October 16.
