Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 players will not have to wait until launch day to start the campaign, provided they are buying the game digitally. Activision has confirmed on the Call of Duty Blog that campaign early access begins Friday, October 16, one week before the full game's October 23 launch.
The early access offer applies to digital pre-orders and pre-purchases of the Standard Digital Edition or Vault Edition. Activision lists Xbox Series X|S, Xbox on PC, PlayStation 5, Battle.net, Steam and Nintendo Switch 2 as supported platforms, although Switch 2 pre-orders are still due to open later this year. The company also notes that the actual start date and platform availability are subject to change.
That makes the campaign the first major piece of Modern Warfare 4 that many players will touch. Multiplayer and the upgraded DMZ mode remain tied to the regular October 23 release, so the early window is specifically for players who want to clear the story before the usual launch-week grind begins.
What Modern Warfare 4 campaign early access includes
Activision's campaign setup puts players in the role of Private Park, a South Korean soldier thrown into live combat after North Korea launches a full-scale invasion. The story also brings back Captain Price, now described as an operator-turned-outlaw working outside the system while chasing revenge and a weapon that could alter the balance of power.
The campaign pitch covers collapsing cities, counteroffensives, covert missions, combined-arms warfare and cinematic set pieces. That is a different emphasis from the wider launch package, where Modern Warfare 4's revived DMZ mode is being positioned as a larger PvPvE pillar for players who want extraction-style missions and longer-term progression.
The return of campaign early access is also notable because Call of Duty has not used the perk every year. Modern Warfare III offered early campaign access in 2023, but Black Ops 6 and Black Ops 7 did not. Bringing it back for Modern Warfare 4 gives Activision another pre-order incentive, but it also separates the single-player story from the launch-day rush around servers, multiplayer metas and progression.
Players have already had reason to watch this detail closely. A previous Modern Warfare 4 listing suggested campaign early access before Activision made the timing official, and the confirmed October 16 date now lines up the game's rollout more clearly. Anyone who wants the campaign first can start a week early, while everyone else gets the full package when Modern Warfare 4 launches on October 23.
Modern Warfare 4 is led by Infinity Ward, with PC development handled in partnership with Beenox and native Nintendo Switch 2 development handled with Digital Legends. Additional support studios include Raven Software, Sledgehammer Games, Treyarch, High Moon Studios and several Activision teams.
