Mega Man DXtreme is out now on PC, giving Capcom's 2000 Game Boy Color spin-off Mega Man Xtreme a fan-made overhaul with a rewritten story, wider screen layout and faster, more responsive play.

The free project keeps the basic setup of Mega Man Xtreme, which originally sent the Mega Man X series through a cyberspace-themed portable adventure built partly from material from Mega Man X and Mega Man X2. This version is not just a straight remake, though. Its team describes it as a revamp with new story events, reworked stage dimensions, updated weapons and redesigned boss encounters.

For players who bounced off Xtreme's handheld compromises, those changes go right at the original's rougher edges. The new release uses a wider resolution based on Game Boy Advance dimensions, adjusts stages to fit that ratio and makes the action quicker. Bosses now have new moves and behaviors, while most weapons have been changed to make them more useful and to add fresh boss interactions.

Mega Man DXtreme was built in Construct 2 by a 12-person team led by director Tomycase. The credits include level designers, musicians and playtesters, with the project reportedly coming together over five months.

The game is already available as a free download on itch.io, and a version 1.1 update has been released to address bugs found by early players. Tomycase has also said there are currently no plans to give Mega Man Xtreme 2 the same treatment, so this looks focused on the first Game Boy Color entry for now.
