Dungeons & Dragons is preparing to show a new dark fantasy setting called Death Saves at Gen Con 2026, with actor and longtime D&D player Joe Manganiello leading its first public live play on July 31.
The Gen Con event listing bills Death Saves as the newest Dungeons & Dragons “Black Label” setting and describes it as a world of Manganiello's own creation. The setup starts after a war that darkness has won, with dead gods and a world barely holding together.
That darker pitch separates Death Saves from the heroic fantasy most players associate with Fifth Edition. It also arrives just as Wizards of the Coast is using Gen Con week for larger D&D reveals, including a separate World of Warcraft crossover leak that has already put extra attention on the tabletop brand's next announcements.
Death Saves debuts at Gen Con this week
The first Death Saves live play is scheduled for Friday, July 31 at 11:30 a.m. ET on the Janet Allen Stage at the Indiana Repertory Theater. The listing names Wizards of the Coast as the gaming group or company behind the event, with free electronic tickets and a 90-minute runtime.
The event description frames the session as a party of god-killers led by Manganiello taking the fight to the Demon Lords. Polygon reported that Manganiello has also posted about the project on X, including the Blood War framing and Mike Mearls' involvement with the setting.
Mearls' involvement gives the reveal extra weight for D&D players. He was co-lead designer on Dungeons & Dragons Fifth Edition and later worked as franchise creative director before leaving Wizards of the Coast in 2023. His return on a mainline D&D project would make Death Saves more than a celebrity-led live play, especially if the Black Label branding becomes a home for older, harsher or more experimental D&D material.
The Death Saves name predates this setting as Manganiello's dark fantasy clothing line, so the project is carrying a built-in aesthetic: heavy metal, grim fantasy and a harsher spin on D&D's usual adventure party energy. The Gen Con listing does not yet give a release date, price or product format for the setting, so it is unclear whether Death Saves will launch as a book, digital product, adventure line or something else after the live play.
The confirmed piece is the Gen Con debut. If Wizards is ready to explain the Black Label plan in full, July 31 is the first place D&D fans should expect answers.
