Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 is changing how some of its multiplayer playlists build lobbies. With Season 5, Activision has added an updated matchmaking system inspired by the older Black Ops games, and it applies to Black Ops Classic, Party Games and Quick Play.
The change is live as part of the Season 5 update, according to the official Call of Duty patch notes. That makes matchmaking one of the more interesting parts of a season that otherwise arrives with new maps, modes, weapons, Zombies content and Endgame additions.
Activision said it has been studying multiplayer matchmaking through player data and community feedback over the past year. It also pointed to renewed interest in Black Ops and Black Ops 2 as part of the reason for the change, after the recent Black Ops 1 and 2 PlayStation ports brought the older games back into the conversation.
The important caveat is that Black Ops 7 already had more than one matchmaking option. Treyarch introduced Open matchmaking before launch as an alternative to the standard system, with Open described at the time as using minimal skill consideration. Season 5 now adds this classic-inspired setup on top of those existing choices, so the split between standard, Open and classic-style matchmaking may not be immediately obvious to returning players.
The patch notes do not spell out exactly how the new system differs from Open matchmaking. What is confirmed is where players will encounter it: Black Ops Classic, Party Games and Quick Play all feature the updated matchmaking at Season 5 launch.
Season 5 itself is a broad update for Black Ops 7. Multiplayer gets Jubilee, Frequency and Dig at launch, while Ranked Play adds new rewards and Skill Rating tuning. Zombies adds the Eidskallen Lighthouse Survival map, Directed Mode for Kowakujō and new Rogue Run playlists on Astra Malorum. Endgame players get the Burn Run Assignment and Exotic Ability Boosts.
The matchmaking change lands at a sensitive time for Call of Duty. The series has spent years hearing arguments about skill-based matchmaking, looser lobby formation and the feel of older multiplayer entries. Black Ops 7 is not simply reverting everything to the past, but Season 5 gives players another playlist-level option shaped by that long-running debate.
