Activision has shut down the latest rumor about Call of Duty staying on PS4. The official Call of Duty account said the next game in the series is not being developed for Sony's last-generation console, a major platform shift for one of gaming's biggest annual releases.
The statement came after a recent Call of Duty 2026 rumor claimed the next entry was being playtested on PS4. Activision did not announce the new game's title, reveal its launch platforms or directly mention Xbox One, but Call of Duty has traditionally treated PlayStation and Xbox console generations together. If PS4 is out, an Xbox One version now looks unlikely as well.
The official Call of Duty post put it bluntly:
"Not sure where this one started, but it’s not true. The next Call of Duty is not being developed for PS4."
The break would end an unusually long cross-gen run. Call of Duty has continued releasing on PS4 and Xbox One years into the PS5 and Xbox Series X|S generation, including Call of Duty: Black Ops 7. Activision's own support page for Black Ops 7 lists that game as available on Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4 and PC through Xbox on PC, Battle.net and Steam.
Call of Duty's last-gen era looks near its end
The move is not surprising this deep into the current console cycle, but it still affects a large part of Call of Duty's audience. PS4 and Xbox One launched in 2013, and Call of Duty has remained one of the few blockbuster series still making room for those machines every year.
That support has already involved compromises. The Black Ops 7 support page says split-screen is available on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, but not on PS4 or Xbox One "to ensure performance integrity." Dropping PS4 development for the next entry could give the series more room on current hardware, though Activision has not detailed any technical benefits or feature changes.
There are still open questions. Activision has not said when the next Call of Duty will be revealed, whether it will carry the rumored Modern Warfare 4 title or what happens to Call of Duty: Warzone support on PS4 and Xbox One. Until the full platform list is announced, the confirmed point is narrower but important: the next premium Call of Duty is not being built for PS4.
