Apex Legends is making one of its biggest revive changes yet in Season 29. When Overclocked launches on May 5, players will be able to respawn dead squadmates directly at their death boxes instead of always rotating to a Respawn Beacon.
The new death box respawn system is designed to keep squads from losing all momentum after they win a fight. Lead battle royale designer Eric Canavese described the feature in a Game Rant interview as similar to having a Mobile Respawn Beacon ready at all times, with enough friction to stop it from feeling free. The revive has a long cast time and broadcasts clear visual and audio cues to nearby enemies.
That warning is the balancing hook. A team can try to bring a player back during a messy fight, but anyone close enough should know it is happening. Canavese said repeated respawns also take longer, which gives Respawn Entertainment another lever to stop the feature from becoming too forgiving.
"If the enemies near you let you get it off, then that's on them."
Death Box Respawns Change the Recovery Window
The biggest impact should come after a squad survives an engagement. Apex Legends matches often swing on the short gap between finishing one fight and being hit by a third party, and the old revive loop could force the winning team to make a long trip to a beacon before it was whole again.
Death box respawns cut that downtime. Canavese said the goal is to get players back to full-team fights without making eliminations feel meaningless.
"It's just shortcutting you to being a full team again and getting you back to the most existing and best parts of the Apex experience, which is fighting with your full squad and going for that win. Whenever I'm playing live, I very much miss death box respawns, and we've tried to make sure that it is done in a way that doesn't feel cheap or unfair. Personally, I think we did hit that. I think we have a good version of it, but we are going to be monitoring and making sure of that. It can be easily tweaked on our end."
The change also puts more pressure on teams to finish fights decisively. Canavese said standard engagements could become more committed because a squad that hesitates may suddenly find itself fighting a full trio again.
Death box respawns are only part of Overclocked's broader push toward faster squad recovery and sharper combat readability. The update will also let players chain and queue healing items so there is no lost moment between activations, with a toggle available. Health bar visibility is being adjusted too, with Respawn aiming to prevent players from seeing health bars when they should not.
Respawn's official Overclocked page also confirms Season 29 will add Axle, a new Skirmisher described as a combat racer, alongside a new Battle Pass. EA's Axle character page frames her as a speed-focused Legend tied to Salvo's underground battle races.
Apex Legends has changed its respawn flow before, including the addition of Mobile Respawn Beacons in 2020, but respawning from a teammate's death box is a much more direct shift to the battle royale's pacing. Season 29 should quickly show whether the noise, cast time and escalating delay are enough to keep that extra second chance tense.
