Marvel's Wolverine is finally more than a logo, a bar fight tease and years of questions. Insomniac Games' next Marvel action game launches September 15, 2026 on PlayStation 5, with preorders now open and the clearest gameplay look yet shown during PlayStation's June State of Play.

The official picture is much clearer than it was after the 2021 reveal. Marvel says the game launches on PlayStation 5 consoles on September 15, 2026, while the PlayStation Store lists the same release date, offline play, one-player support, PS5 Pro Enhanced support and DualSense vibration and trigger effects. Insomniac is pitching the game as an original Logan story with violent claw combat, a darker tone than its Spider-Man games and a global fight for mutant survival.

There are still major unknowns. Sony has not announced a PC version, Insomniac has not shown every mission type and the studio is still holding back parts of the cast. But between the 2025 gameplay trailer, the June 2026 extended gameplay trailer, the PlayStation game page, Marvel's release-date post and Insomniac's new story breakdown, we now know enough to draw a clean line between confirmed facts and fan speculation.

Marvel's Wolverine release date

Marvel's Wolverine launches on September 15, 2026.

That date is now listed by Marvel, the PlayStation Store and Insomniac's verified Bluesky account. Insomniac's February 2026 social post put it bluntly: "Let's cut to the chase: Marvel's Wolverine launches September 15, 2026." The PlayStation Store also lists the release as September 15, 2026 at 04:00 UTC.

Before that date appeared, Sony and Insomniac had only committed to Fall 2026. The specific date gives PlayStation one of its biggest first-party releases of the year. PlayStation's June 2 State of Play has now happened, and our State of Play coverage covers the extended trailer, Jean Grey reveal and preorder rollout.

Is Marvel's Wolverine only on PS5?

Yes, based on current official information, Marvel's Wolverine is a PlayStation 5 game.

The official PlayStation game page says the game is available on PS5, is PS5 Pro Enhanced and was built from the ground up for PlayStation 5 consoles. Its FAQ says it will not be available for PlayStation 4.

No PC version has been announced. That does not rule out a later PC port forever, especially after Sony brought several PlayStation Studios games to PC in recent years, but it would be speculation to treat one as guaranteed. At launch, the confirmed platform is PlayStation 5.

What kind of game is it?

Marvel's Wolverine is a single-player action-adventure game from Insomniac Games, developed with Marvel Games and Sony Interactive Entertainment.

The PlayStation page describes it as an all-new take on the Marvel Comics character. It also lists offline play and one-player support, so this is not being positioned as a live-service multiplayer game. The pitch is a focused, cinematic action game about Logan cutting through enemies while chasing the truth about his past.

Insomniac has also clarified that this is not an open-world Spider-Man-style sandbox. In an IGN interview, the studio described Marvel's Wolverine as a linear single-player adventure with high-intensity missions, optional stealth, collectibles and some optional content. Expect the studio's usual set-piece craft and accessibility focus, but not the same structure or tone as Peter Parker and Miles Morales swinging through New York.

The story follows Logan, Team X and hunted mutants

Insomniac is not adapting one comic storyline directly, at least not in the way Sony has described the game so far. Marvel's Wolverine is an original story starring Logan.

According to the PlayStation game page, Logan thought he was finished being Wolverine, but the past was not finished with him. Three years after leaving Team X, he rejoins the mutant task force during its darkest hour. Bolivar Trask is kidnapping mutants through the Reavers, a cybernetic guns-for-hire militia, and Logan is pulled into a fight for mutant survival.

The September 2025 PlayStation Blog post says Logan will have to tear information out of enemies trying to stop him, while his rapid healing factor keeps him in the fight. Liam McIntyre plays Wolverine, with Insomniac saying he taps into the character's rage, pain and emotional nuance.

The game is being described as a globe-spanning thriller. Confirmed locations include Madripoor, the frosted wilderness of Canada and Tokyo's narrow city streets. Madripoor is especially meaningful for Wolverine fans because the island nation has deep comic-book ties to Logan, espionage stories and the seedier corners of Marvel's mutant world.

Which Marvel characters are confirmed?

Logan is the lead, but he is not alone.

Insomniac and PlayStation have confirmed Jean Grey, Mystique, Omega Red, Sabretooth and Bolivar Trask. The Reavers are also confirmed as an enemy faction, with the June 2026 PlayStation Blog breakdown describing them as cybernetically enhanced mercenaries working for Trask.

Jean Grey is more than a background cameo. The June gameplay sequence shows her helping Logan against the Reavers, while Insomniac says her telekinesis can create Critical Strike openings for Wolverine. Sabretooth is also part of Logan's orbit, and Insomniac has said the X-Men do not exist as a formal team in this story. Our X-Men and Spider-Man crossover story has more on that distinction.

The important caveat is that not every appearance tells us a character's full role. PlayStation says some characters will fight alongside Logan and others will attack him. Jean, Mystique, Omega Red, Sabretooth, Trask and the Reavers are confirmed to appear, but the full cast list, boss lineup and story alliances are still under wraps.

What did the gameplay trailers show?

The 2025 gameplay trailer made the tone obvious: this is a much bloodier Insomniac game than Marvel's Spider-Man.

Marvel's Wolverine Gameplay Trailer
Insomniac's 2025 gameplay trailer shows Logan fighting through Madripoor, Canada, Tokyo and other violent set pieces before the September 2026 launch.

The footage shows Logan fighting in close quarters with adamantium claws, fast lunges, finishers and heavy impacts. Marvel's own write-up calls out fire, ice, guts, the Princess Bar, cold wilderness, Omega Red, Mystique and Logan's regenerative healing factor. PlayStation describes the combat as fast, fluid and ferocious, with brutal attacks that can dismember or break enemies.

PlayStation's June 2026 extended gameplay trailer goes further, showing Logan tracking kidnapped mutants, fighting Reavers, teaming with Jean Grey and tearing through a highway set piece on a motorcycle.

Marvel's Wolverine Extended Gameplay Trailer
The June 2026 extended gameplay trailer shows Logan fighting the Reavers, working with Jean Grey and using Rage during brutal close-range combat.

Insomniac says attacks, parries and kills build Logan's Rage. Rage can power stronger attacks or activate his Healing Factor when he takes heavy body damage. If Rage is pushed far enough, Logan can unleash a stylized Rage Tier 3 burst inspired by Marvel Comics' Black, White & Blood series. The footage also shows Techniques such as Tornado Spin and Bull Rush, plus Critical Strikes that can happen solo or with allies like Jean.

That still does not mean we know every design detail. Insomniac has not detailed the full upgrade path, every accessibility option, all side content or how each ally works across the campaign. The trailers confirm the tone, structure and combat fantasy. They do not answer every systems question.

Are preorders and editions live?

Yes. Preorders are now open through PlayStation Store, PlayStation Direct and participating retailers.

The Standard Edition is priced at $69.99 USD, £69.99, €79.99 and ¥8,980. Preorder bonuses include an early unlock for the Classic Brown suit, Reflective Claws, one Technique Point and four PlayStation Avatars.

The Digital Deluxe Edition is priced at $79.99, £79.99, €89.99 and ¥9,980. It includes the digital game, all preorder bonuses, three extra Technique Points, five exclusive suits and five exclusive claw cosmetics. Insomniac says the suits and claws are cosmetic, while other claws can be unlocked in the base game through standard progression.

Is Marvel's Wolverine rated M?

Sony and Marvel are clearly presenting Marvel's Wolverine as violent, and the PlayStation Store now lists ESRB content descriptors including blood and gore, drug reference, intense violence, partial nudity, strong language and in-game purchases.

Insomniac is still giving players some control over how much gore they see. Game director Mike Daly told IGN that the game includes an accessibility option to turn off gore, including blood, for players who want a less graphic version of the Wolverine fantasy. Our low-gore option story covers that feature in more detail.

What about the 2023 leaks?

Marvel's Wolverine was hit by a major leak after a criminal ransomware attack on Insomniac in 2023. Those materials included early development information, but they should not be treated as current public fact.

Insomniac said at the time, in a statement reported by The Verge, that Marvel's Wolverine continued as planned and that the game would evolve during development. That is the right lens for any leaked claim: even if something came from real stolen material, it may be outdated, changed or never intended for release.

For this guide, the reliable information is what Insomniac, Marvel, Sony and PlayStation have shown publicly.

What fans are still debating

The big community questions are now about scope, violence and how far Insomniac will push its Marvel universe links.

State of Play answered some of the old questions around combat, structure and preorders. It did not reveal every mission type, every villain, all costumes or post-launch plans. There is also the usual PlayStation PC-port debate, but no official PC version exists right now.

The safest expectation is that Marvel's Wolverine is a Logan-first game, not a broad X-Men ensemble. Jean Grey, Mystique, Omega Red and Sabretooth can appear without making this an X-Men game, and Insomniac has already said Spider-Man overlap will stay at Easter egg level instead of becoming a crossover.

The bottom line

Marvel's Wolverine is now one of PlayStation's clearest 2026 exclusives: September 15, PS5 only, preorders live, a linear single-player structure and a story built around Logan, Team X, Jean Grey, Trask and the Reavers.

There is still room for Insomniac to surprise players with more villains, costumes and mission details before launch. The confirmed version is already specific enough, though: a violent, globe-hopping Wolverine action game that separates Logan's mutant survival story from both Spider-Man crossover expectations and full X-Men team-up hopes.
