Santa Monica Studio has told fans that God of War Laufey will be released on disc, a small update with bigger timing implications after PlayStation's recent decision to stop producing physical discs for new games in January 2028.
The studio has not announced a release date for God of War Laufey. Still, a disc version would place the Faye-led PS5 game before PlayStation's physical cutoff unless Sony makes an exception or changes the policy later. That makes the latest comment another sign that Laufey is being lined up as a 2027 release.
The disc question came up after PlayStation confirmed that new physical game production will end in 2028. The company said the change will not affect games that already released, or games that launch in disc format before January 2028.
Santa Monica is heading to Comic-Con with Laufey
The timing also lines up with PlayStation's San Diego Comic-Con plans. In a PlayStation Blog schedule, Sony listed a God of War Laufey panel for Friday, July 24 from 5:30 to 6:30 PM PT in Ballroom 20.
The panel, titled Forging God of War's Next Heroes, will feature Game Director Ariel Lawrence and Santa Monica Studio Head of Creative Cory Barlog alongside cast members Deborah Ann Woll, Chris Judge, Jack Quaid and Perlina Lau. PlayStation says the panel will cover new details about Laufey's heroes, development stories and performance capture.
That does not guarantee a release date at Comic-Con. The official panel description is focused on characters and behind-the-scenes material, not preorders or launch timing. But between the disc confirmation, the Comic-Con showcase and earlier reporting that God of War Laufey was targeting early 2027, the game's window is starting to look less open-ended than it did at reveal.
Laufey is still only confirmed for PS5
The official God of War Laufey page lists the game for PlayStation 5 and says players can wishlist it to be notified when the release date and preorders are available. It also describes Laufey as a standalone story about Faye fighting through the Everywhen, an afterlife where gods from multiple mythologies compete for power.
Sony has not announced PC plans, editions or preorder details. For now, the confirmed player-facing pieces are simpler: God of War Laufey is coming to PS5, it will have a disc version and its next public stop is Comic-Con later this month.
