*Sword Art Online* fans can now try *Echoes of Aincrad* before launch. Bandai Namco has released a playable demo for the upcoming action RPG on Steam, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, giving players a sample of its create-your-own-hero take on Aincrad ahead of the full release on July 10.
The demo is available through the official Bandai Namco demo announcement, which says it covers the "beta phase" of the story with five full missions and every weapon type available to test. Save data from the demo will carry into the full game, so anyone starting early will not have to replay that progress at launch.
Echoes of Aincrad puts the player in the death game
Unlike several earlier *Sword Art Online* games, *Echoes of Aincrad* does not center the adventure on Kirito, Asuna or another established lead. Bandai Namco describes it as the first *Sword Art Online* video game where players create the protagonist themselves, then shape that character through avatar customization, weapons, stats, partner choices and special skills.
The setup returns to the floating castle of Aincrad, the original death-game setting that defined the franchise. Combat is real-time action RPG fare, with players upgrading equipment, choosing skills and leaning on an NPC partner with their own abilities. The official game page also lists Game Studio Inc. as developer and Bandai Namco Entertainment as publisher.
Bandai Namco's earlier North American announcement lists *Echoes of Aincrad* for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC via Steam. The Steam page currently lists July 9, which likely reflects storefront timing, while Bandai Namco's announcement and game page use July 10 for the broader launch date.
Preorders are open now, with the official page listing Standard, Deluxe and Ultimate editions. The Deluxe and Ultimate editions include early access to Death Game Mode as a bonus, while all preorders include the Weapon Pack: Proto-Elucidator Series.
