The Alters: Last Variable has a new gameplay trailer from PlayStation, giving 11 bit studios' sci-fi survival game another push before its first major paid expansion arrives on July 13.
The trailer centers on Jan Scientist, a version of protagonist Jan Dolski tied to one of the base game's endings. According to the Steam page for Last Variable, the DLC follows the ending where Jan Scientist stays on the planet and is expected to run about 20 hours.
That is a substantial add-on for The Alters, which already sits somewhere between survival management, narrative adventure and psychological sci-fi. The base game follows Jan Dolski after a crash on a hostile planet, where survival depends on creating alternate versions of himself through Rapidium. Each alter comes from a different life path, turning base management into a chain of arguments with the person Jan might have become.
Last Variable's setup keeps that identity problem at the center. The trailer description says Jan Scientist awakens with what he has built, discovered and created already at his disposal, then has to form a specialized team of Alters and solve the enigma of the Oasis before the planet's sun catches up. Steam's listing is more restrained, confirming the Jan Scientist route and the estimated playtime without laying out every mechanic.
The expansion matters because The Alters is not a game that can simply add another biome and call it done. Its strongest idea is the pressure between survival systems and Jan's fractured crew, so a DLC built around a specific ending has to carry both sides: resource planning on a deadly planet and the consequences of leaving one version of Jan behind.
11 bit studios has also positioned The Alters as a character-driven survival game rather than a pure crafting loop. The official game page describes Jan's alters as versions shaped by crucial decisions from his past, while PlayStation's own store page lists base building, resource gathering, alter management and branching storylines among the core features.
Players who finished The Alters get a clear signal here: Last Variable is not framed as a side challenge detached from the ending. It follows a particular outcome, which makes it closer to an alternate continuation than a simple extra mission pack. Anyone still working through the base game may want to avoid digging too far into DLC material before reaching the relevant ending.
The release date still carries one small source wrinkle. PlayStation's trailer description says the expansion launches July 13, 2025, but the video was published in 2026 and Steam lists Last Variable for July 13, 2026. The store listing is the cleaner date reference for anyone wishlisting the DLC.
The Alters: Last Variable is listed for PC on Steam, with earlier announcement materials also naming Epic Games Store, GOG, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. The base game is already available on PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC.
