State of Decay 3 is still planned for 2027, but its day-one Game Pass status is no longer as certain as it looked a month ago.
The zombie survival sequel is caught up in Microsoft's wider Xbox restructure, which includes moving Undead Labs to new ownership. Microsoft has said the studio will receive funding to complete and grow State of Decay 3, but a Game File report says the deal frees the game from "any Xbox-controlling terms." If that detail holds, the new owner would not be required to put State of Decay 3 into Game Pass at launch.
Microsoft has not announced a Game Pass change for State of Decay 3, and the game's official Xbox page still says players can "Play day one with Game Pass." That leaves the current situation in a strange middle ground: Xbox's public store and marketing still present the game as a Game Pass release, while the reported studio-sale terms suggest the obligation may no longer be attached.
Game Pass was part of the pitch in June
The uncertainty lands only weeks after State of Decay 3's gameplay reveal at the Xbox Games Showcase. Xbox Wire said in June that the game would launch in 2027 for Xbox Series X|S, Xbox on PC, cloud, Steam and PlayStation 5, with Game Pass included.
That reveal was also the clearest look yet at the game itself. Undead Labs described a larger open-world survival sandbox with solo play, shared-world co-op for up to four players, settlement building, multiple bases, Plague Nests and a map about four times the size of a single State of Decay 2 map.
The Game Pass question matters because State of Decay 3 had been treated like a first-party Xbox release, even after Microsoft's multiplatform push put the game on PlayStation 5. If the sequel launches outside Game Pass, it would be another visible break from the old promise that Xbox-owned games would arrive in the subscription catalog on day one.
Undead Labs' new owner has not been named
The identity of Undead Labs' buyer has not been announced. Game File reported that the new owner is expected to be revealed later this summer.
Microsoft's broader restructuring plan has already reshaped several studios. Double Fine and Compulsion Games are leaving Xbox with their IP and catalogs, while Ninja Theory and Undead Labs are moving toward new ownership with project funding attached. State of Decay 3 was previously one of the games highlighted when Undead Labs was reported to be at risk in Xbox layoffs.
State of Decay 3 remains officially listed for 2027. The unresolved part is whether Xbox and Undead Labs' next owner will make a fresh Game Pass deal, or whether the sequel launches as a standard paid release across Xbox, PC and PS5.
