State of Decay 3 finally has real gameplay footage, a 2027 launch window and a much clearer shape after years of quiet development at Undead Labs.

The new official reveal post says the sequel will be an open-world survival sandbox with solo play or shared world co-op for up to four players. It is planned for Xbox Series X|S, Xbox on PC, cloud, Game Pass, Xbox Play Anywhere, Steam and PlayStation 5.

The platform list carries extra weight because State of Decay is an Xbox Game Studios series. This entry is already confirmed beyond the Xbox ecosystem, with PS5 and Steam listed alongside Game Pass and Play Anywhere.

Shared co-op changes the sequel's shape

Creative director Kevin Patzelt said State of Decay 3 is targeting 2027 and that players are already testing an alpha build. Undead Labs is taking signups through the State of Decay 3 playtest waitlist, with more alpha and beta access planned over time.

The biggest design shift is the shared world. Players will be able to change the same save asynchronously, build facilities, expand into second and third settlements and work with other survivor groups called Enclaves. Undead Labs is pitching a persistent community that friends can shape from different corners of the map, not a simple drop-in zombie fight.

Patzelt said that direction grew out of what State of Decay 2 players kept asking for: better multiplayer and a shared space. The sequel also keeps solo play, but the new co-op structure is clearly where Undead Labs is spending a lot of its sequel energy.

Plague Nests push back against players

The trailer also introduces Plague Nests, which sound like a major evolution of State of Decay 2's Plague Hearts. Patzelt described them as enemy hubs with their own plans, behaviors and reactions to player actions.

Some nests may spread quickly, while others may stay contained but become harder to clear. Undead Labs is calling these behavior sets personas, which means the same system can behave differently across play sessions and saves.

Combat is changing too. State of Decay 2 had one melee attack button, while State of Decay 3 adds quick and power attacks. The enemy roster is returning from the previous game, but Undead Labs says each zombie type has been more clearly specialized.

The map is far bigger than State of Decay 2

Undead Labs says the playable space in State of Decay 3 is about four times the size of a single State of Decay 2 map, and it will be fully open once players join the game.

The sequel is also leaning harder into settlement building and crafting. Players can claim multiple settlements, set up facilities around shared or individual goals and find altered weapons that reflect a rough maker-culture approach to surviving after the apocalypse.

Patzelt also stressed that the trailer was captured from the game, not CGI. He said some shots use cinematic camera angles, but the over-the-shoulder footage is meant to show the real gameplay camera, with more to be shown later.

State of Decay 3 is available to wishlist now on its Xbox game page. A specific release date has not been announced.
