Rare has retired the Sea of Thieves Boatswain role after allegations against a former community ambassador prompted a wider backlash around player safety, creator oversight and how the studio handles reports inside its community programs.
In an official community values statement, Rare said the recent allegations it had seen online were "deeply concerning" and did not align with the studio's values. The developer did not name the person involved or discuss specific disciplinary action, saying reports are handled confidentially, but it said supported allegations are acted on and can be escalated to platform owners or law enforcement where needed.
The controversy centers on accusations that a former Boatswain, an ambassador-style status within the Sea of Thieves community, engaged in inappropriate behavior involving minors. The creator has reportedly been banned from Sea of Thieves, while the allegations have also led players to question how community representatives are selected and monitored.
Rare says community program reviews are coming
Rare's most concrete change is the immediate retirement of the Boatswain role. The studio said the situation had created a difficult environment for other Boatswains and that it will now take time to review and tighten how members are onboarded and evaluated across all Sea of Thieves community programs.
"Games, communities and online spaces are always evolving, and so will our policies, processes and programmes to ensure the ongoing security and safety of our players."
Rare also said internal investigations will be used in areas where more scrutiny is needed. The studio cautioned that it will not publicly share the outcomes of those investigations, though players may notice some resulting changes later.
The statement tries to draw two lines at once: Rare is encouraging people who experienced or witnessed conduct that breaches the Sea of Thieves Code of Conduct to report it through customer support, while also saying it will disengage from conversations that become harassment or abuse toward community members or staff.
That balance is now the pressure point for the Sea of Thieves community. The allegations are serious, but much of the anger around Rare's response has focused on whether the studio acted quickly enough, whether discussion was suppressed and whether official community roles carried enough oversight before the Boatswain role was removed.
Sea of Thieves remains one of Rare's defining modern games, with a long-running live-service audience across Xbox, PC and PlayStation 5. This is not a balance patch or a seasonal event dispute. It is a community trust issue, and Rare's next visible changes to its partner and ambassador systems will be watched closely by players who want more than a values statement.
