Guild Wars is getting its first collectible card game spin-off with Mistbound: Guild Wars Card Game, a free-to-play tactical card battler planned for PC and mobile platforms.

The new project is set in ArenaNet's MMO universe, but it is not being built solely inside ArenaNet. The Guild Wars IP has been licensed to bilibili for publication, while development is being handled by Korean studio NC, formerly known as NCSoft. The official Mistbound site describes it as a tactical card battler that mixes deckbuilding and card collection with battlefield movement.

That positioning gives Mistbound a different job from the recently revealed Guild Wars 3. ArenaNet has been setting expectations around the next MMO, including its stance against subscriptions and pay-to-win monetization, while Mistbound is taking the same fantasy universe into a genre where long-term card acquisition and monetization will be watched closely.

Mistbound battles take place on a 5x3 grid. Players choose a commander, then use cards in turn-based combat with positioning as a core part of the match. Cards can be moved in multiple directions each turn, opening room for flanking, repositioning and knockback effects instead of leaving the game as a purely static hand-versus-hand duel.

The game will include single-player and PvP modes. Commanders are drawn from returning Guild Wars characters, with unique passive traits and active abilities inspired by Guild Wars 2's Professions. Music from original Guild Wars composers and voice acting are also planned.

The major unanswered point is how Mistbound will handle its free-to-play card economy. No release target has been announced, and the reveal did not explain how players will earn or buy cards. In a CCG, that detail can shape everything from casual friendliness to competitive balance, so it is likely to be one of the biggest questions around the game before launch.
