Discord is recovering from a Friday outage that hit one of gaming's most widely used communication services. The company's status page lists the incident as "Increased API Errors," with availability problems affecting some users across login and message sending.
In an official incident report, Discord said it began investigating API errors at 12:08 PM PDT on May 8. By 12:24 PM PDT, the company said it had identified the issue and that many users were unable to start their sessions.
The incident moved through several updates over the next hour. At 12:56 PM PDT, Discord said it was continuing to remediate availability issues and confirmed the problem was causing impact "across our service, including logging in and sending messages." At 1:16 PM PDT, the company reported significant recovery while restoring ancillary services and metering traffic as users reconnected.
Discord says recovery is underway
Discord's latest status update, posted at 1:19 PM PDT, says the service is beginning to recover, but work is still ongoing to return it to a fully healthy state. The main status page shows the incident as unresolved at the time of writing.
That distinction is worth noting because Discord can look partially functional during a recovery period while some users still run into errors. The platform's API, gateway and client services are central to the basic Discord experience, including opening the app, connecting to servers and sending messages.
The outage is especially visible in gaming because Discord has become the default coordination tool for many players, guilds, clans and community servers. Voice chat, text channels and server announcements often sit alongside the game itself, so even a partial disruption can interrupt multiplayer sessions, community events and developer-run support channels.
Discord has not publicly detailed the cause of the API errors. Its status page says recovery operations are continuing, and users affected by login or message failures should watch the official incident page for further updates.
