Final Fantasy 14 is officially live on Nintendo Switch 2, giving Nintendo's new hardware one of the biggest modern MMOs available on the system, provided you can clear a very large space for it.
The new version arrived on August 4, 2026 and includes a free trial on Nintendo Switch 2. According to Square Enix's launch post, the product lineup now includes the Starter Edition, Complete Edition, Complete Collector's Edition and Final Fantasy XIV Online Free Trial on Nintendo eShop.
For newcomers, the trial is not a tiny demo. Nintendo's UK store page says the Final Fantasy XIV Online Free Trial includes A Realm Reborn, Heavensward, Stormblood and Shadowbringers. That lines up with Square Enix's broader trial setup and gives new players the same huge early-game runway that recently helped Final Fantasy XIV return to Steam's top 100.
The catch is the install size. Nintendo's US listing puts the download at 117.2GB, which is a serious bite out of the Switch 2's internal storage before any expansion buying, patching or other games enter the picture. Anyone planning to sample Eorzea on handheld hardware may want to check storage before starting the download.
Square Enix is also softening the launch window for paying players. Subscription fees are being waived for approximately one month after release, after which the 30-day free play period included when registering a new platform begins. Once those periods end, a subscription is required to keep playing.
That subscription is platform-specific. Square Enix says the Switch 2 version requires a separate subscription even if you already pay on another platform, although players with remaining game time elsewhere can get the Switch 2 subscription at half price. The company had already warned about that setup when it dated the Switch 2 version for August.
There are a few Nintendo-specific account details too. A Nintendo Switch Online membership is not required to play Final Fantasy XIV on Switch 2, but subscribers get one extra aetheryte as a free teleport destination while playing this version. Square Enix says subscriptions, optional items and some services on Switch 2 use FFXIV Coins bought through the Nintendo eShop.
Complete Edition buyers also have an early launch deal. Square Enix says both Complete Edition versions are 30 percent off until Thursday, August 13, 2026. The free trial remains the cleanest first step if you are new, though, since buying a Switch 2 edition immediately blocks access to that trial path.
