Final Fantasy 14 is headed to Nintendo Switch 2 in August, giving Square Enix's long-running MMO another console home. The catch is a big one for existing players: the Switch 2 version will require its own subscription rather than simply folding into a player's current PC or console plan.

Producer and director Naoki "Yoshi-P" Yoshida and Square Enix CEO Takashi Kiryu announced the Switch 2 version during Final Fantasy 14 Fan Fest 2026, as reported by IGN, where the game was shown running on Nintendo's new hardware. Square Enix has not announced a specific August release date yet.

The separate subscription makes this version unusual for Final Fantasy 14, especially for players already paying to keep their characters active elsewhere. Square Enix is softening that requirement in two ways. The Switch 2 edition will not require Nintendo Switch Online, and players with an active Final Fantasy 14 subscription will be able to buy the Switch 2 subscription at 50 percent off the full price.

Yoshida said the arrangement came after months of talks with Nintendo.

"After discussions with Nintendo, it was decided that the Switch 2 version of Final Fantasy 14 would require a separate subscription," Yoshida said through a translator.

"Again, this was decided after many months of discussions with Nintendo, and I understand that this is different to how we’ve done things before."

For a game built around long-term characters, cross-platform routines and daily MMO habits, the extra fee is likely to be the part players weigh most heavily. A portable Final Fantasy 14 option on Switch 2 could make sense for casual duties, crafting or lighter PvE sessions away from a desk or TV, but the value depends on how much the separate subscription costs. Square Enix has not shared that price yet.

Yoshida also said the on-stage Switch 2 demo came together very late, after he decided only a week before the event that he wanted to play the new version during the presentation.

"A week ago, I had this great idea to play the Switch 2 on stage here, and Nintendo kind of freaked out a little,” Yoshida said.

"They were like, 'What?!' But they cooperated and helped us so much to make this happen, so thank you, Nintendo, very much to help us make this happen on-stage today."

The Switch 2 release is arriving while Final Fantasy 14 is still moving through its Dawntrail era. Patch 7.5, Trail to the Heavens, is also on the way with new story quests, an alliance raid, a limited job and more.
