Nintendo has added a new Storybook chapter to Super Mario Galaxy 2, giving the Switch release a small but unexpected piece of extra lore months after the game returned on modern hardware.

The new chapter arrived through Super Mario Galaxy 2 Ver. 1.4.0, which was released on April 29. Nintendo says the update adds a new story to the in-game Storybook and also includes fixes and adjustments intended to make the game run more smoothly on Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2.

According to Nintendo's announcement, the added chapter continues the story of the twin Lumas, Mari and Lu, as well as the "lady of shooting stars." Players can read it after the Final Chapter is available in the Storybook, then clearing any galaxy and earning a Power Star.

The timing gives the update a little more weight than a normal maintenance patch. Super Mario Galaxy 2's Storybook has always been one of the series' more quietly beloved pieces of background storytelling, especially because of its connection to Rosalina and the cosmic fairy-tale tone around the Galaxy games.

Nintendo also added a new track from the latest chapter to the Super Mario Galaxy 2 playlist in Nintendo Music. The app is included with Nintendo Switch Online memberships and collects soundtracks from a range of Nintendo franchises.

The update applies to the Switch version of Super Mario Galaxy 2, which is sold on its own and as part of the Super Mario Galaxy + Super Mario Galaxy 2 bundle. Nintendo's store page lists the collection as playable on Nintendo Switch, with a free update for Nintendo Switch 2 that supports 4K resolution on compatible displays.

Nintendo is also tying the Galaxy revival into its wider Mario rollout. The company says Nintendo Switch Online members can redeem My Nintendo Platinum Points for Super Mario Galaxy + Super Mario Galaxy 2 icon elements through the Missions & Rewards tab, while The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is now playing in theaters nationwide.
