Nintendo has put an end date on original Switch hardware sales in Europe. In a support update about battery-related product revisions, Nintendo of Europe says it will no longer sell Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch Lite or Nintendo Switch OLED hardware through Nintendo Store after mid-February 2027, and will stop selling those systems to retailers at the same time.

The change is tied to European battery regulations that take effect in mid-February 2027. Nintendo says selected products sold in Europe will be replaced on a rolling basis by revised versions with user-replaceable batteries, but the original Switch family is not on that revision list.

Nintendo says Switch hardware will continue to be manufactured in 2026 and should remain widely available in Europe throughout the year. Existing owners do not need to do anything because the new rules do not affect products sold before they come into force.

Switch 2 Gets Revised Hardware, Original Switch Does Not

Nintendo's revised products start with selected Joy-Con colors in summer 2026. A revised Nintendo Switch 2 console is expected in autumn, with a user-replaceable battery, a 5172mAh battery that is about 1% smaller than the current 5220mAh version and a console weight of about 411g, around 10g heavier than the current model. With Joy-Con 2 attached, the revised Switch 2 is listed at about 548g, around 14g heavier.

Joy-Con 2 controllers, the Nintendo Switch 2 Pro Controller, the Nintendo 64 Controller for Nintendo Switch and the GameCube Controller for Nintendo Switch 2 are also scheduled for revised European versions between winter 2026 and early 2027. Nintendo says battery replacement kits for each revised product will be sold through Nintendo Store in Europe later.

The products not being replaced with user-replaceable battery versions include Nintendo Switch, Switch Lite, Switch OLED, the Switch Pro Controller, Pokémon GO Plus +, the NES Controller for Nintendo Switch, the SEGA Mega Drive Control Pad for Nintendo Switch and the SNES Controller for Nintendo Switch. Nintendo says those products will no longer be offered on Nintendo Store after mid-February 2027, though retail availability may vary.

Services Will Continue After Hardware Sales End

This is not a Switch shutdown notice. Nintendo says Switch owners can continue using existing games and accessories, and that Nintendo eShop, Nintendo Switch Online and other services will continue "for the foreseeable future."

The timing gives the date some extra weight. Mid-February 2027 lands almost ten years after the Nintendo Switch launched in March 2017, closing the European retail window for one of Nintendo's most successful systems while the company moves its active hardware line toward Switch 2 and regulation-ready accessories.
