Bungie is making Marathon's last stretch of Season 1 faster and more generous. Update 1.0.9 adds Warden Hunt, boosts XP gains and opens up more chances to run Cryo Archive before the extraction shooter's next seasonal reset.
The timing is the main hook. Marathon Season 2 starts June 2 with a full progress reset, so this update is aimed at players trying to finish contracts, raise faction progress or squeeze more loot out of the season before Nightfall arrives.
According to Bungie's patch notes, Warden Hunt will run through the end of Season 1. Wardens can now appear at new points of interest on Perimeter, Dire Marsh and Outpost, and they will guarantee locked room key drops for the rest of the season. Key Templates have also been changed from Fragile to Compromised.
Every run now has a guaranteed chance for a zone event to occur, including events such as Lockdowns and Intercept. Bungie is also teasing a new threat, with the patch notes saying only that something new "looms above."
Marathon is speeding up progression before the reset
The most direct player reward is a 50% boost to Runner Level XP and Faction XP through the end of Season 1. Enemy XP payouts have been raised too. Wardens now grant 50 XP, UESC Commanders give 15 XP and other UESC enemies such as Grenadiers, Assault units, Snipers and Ghosts give 10 XP. Transport Drones and Scan Drones now award 10 Traxus XP.
Cryo Archive is also becoming easier to access. Starting May 21, the endgame map will be available every day through June 1, with Ranked Cryo Archive scheduled from May 24 to May 27. Cryo Archive Sponsored Kits will refresh daily in the Armory, giving players a safer way to take more shots at the endgame activity.
That makes Update 1.0.9 feel less like a routine bug-fix patch and more like a season-ending push. Bungie's official Marathon page describes the game as a PvPvE survival extraction FPS set on Tau Ceti IV, where players bring gear into dangerous runs and risk losing it while chasing better builds. More guaranteed events, more Warden rewards and higher XP all hit that loop directly.
Update 1.0.9 also reins in revive speed and weapon mods
The patch is not only about bonuses. Revive Speed has been slowed at both ends of the stat range, moving from 12 seconds to 16 seconds at 0 Revive Speed and from 7 seconds to 12 seconds at 100 Revive Speed.
Several weapons and mods have also been adjusted. The Biotoxin Disinjector has a fix for missing grenade explosion audio outside the damage radius. The Ares Railgun's Impact Shockwave prestige mod no longer downs players with blue shields or better in one shot, and its explosive damage against players has been reduced by 75%. The Circuit Breaker's Overclock Delimiter can no longer shoot through UESC barriers or Bubble shields.
Rook gets a small lift before the season ends, starting with Deluxe Patch Kits, Shield Charges and Deluxe Shield Implants. Signal Mask also stays active longer while sprinting, and AI detection range for footsteps has been reduced while the ability is active.
The update lands after Bungie acknowledged Marathon's early live-service learning curve and outlined larger Season 2 changes. The next season is expected to bring Night Marsh, a new Runner shell, new weapons, The Cradle system and onboarding improvements. Marathon is also arriving during a more pressured period for Bungie, after Sony's recent impairment losses put Bungie's game performance under sharper scrutiny.
For the players still running Season 1, Update 1.0.9 gives them a clear reason to return before the wipe: more predictable endgame access, faster progression and Warden rewards that are no longer left to chance.
