Fortnite is back on Apple's App Store in most countries, giving iPhone and iPad players another official way to download the battle royale as Epic Games presses ahead with its long-running fight over Apple storefront fees.

Epic said in a May 19 announcement that Fortnite has returned to the App Store worldwide, though Australia remains the major exception. The company framed the rollout as part of the "final battle" in Epic v. Apple, the legal dispute that began after Apple removed Fortnite from the App Store in 2020 over Epic's attempt to route players toward external payment options.

The return is bigger than a normal store listing because Fortnite's iOS availability has become tied to a wider fight over who controls payments on mobile platforms. Epic argues that Apple should not be allowed to block alternative app stores or impose extra fees on purchases made outside Apple's own payment system.

Apple has warned that regulators outside the United States are watching the case closely. In a statement cited by Epic, Apple said, "Regulators around the world are watching this case to determine what commission rate Apple may charge on covered purchases in huge markets outside the United States."

Australia is still waiting

Fortnite is not back on the Australian App Store yet. Epic says it has won legal ground there, but claims Apple is still enforcing payment terms that prevent the company from returning Fortnite under acceptable conditions.

Epic also pointed to pressure in Japan, the United Kingdom and the European Union, where regulators have been scrutinizing Apple's App Store rules and the way the company handles outside payment options. The company says those markets are part of the reason it expects the Apple fee fight to keep spreading beyond the original U.S. case.

The latest rollout follows an important court step earlier this month, when U.S. Supreme Court Justice Elena Kagan declined Apple's request to pause a Ninth Circuit order connected to the contempt ruling in the Epic case. That kept pressure on Apple as the dispute moves toward a court process over what App Store commission, if any, Apple can charge on certain purchases handled through external links.

For Fortnite players, the immediate change is straightforward: the game is easier to get on iOS again in most regions. For Epic and Apple, the App Store return is also a public bet that courts and regulators will keep narrowing Apple's control over mobile payments.
