Assassin's Creed Black Flag Resynced is bringing Edward Kenway's pirate epic back on July 9, with Ubisoft rebuilding the 2013 adventure for PlayStation 5 while keeping the original single-player story at the center.
The remake is not just a visual pass over one of the series' most beloved entries. Ubisoft says the team has also worked on quality-of-life changes, new story material, updated traversal, reworked combat and improvements to stealth, all while using player feedback workshops to avoid pushing the game too far away from what made Black Flag work.
Edward Kenway, the Jackdaw and the Caribbean return
Black Flag Resynced keeps Edward Kenway as its lead, with Matt Ryan returning as the character's original voice actor. The supporting cast still includes historical pirates such as Blackbeard, Anne Bonny and Charles Vane, while the Caribbean setting again spans locations including Nassau, Kingston and Havana.
The Jackdaw is also back as a central part of the experience. Players will still sail, raid, board enemy ships and hear sea shanties from the crew, but naval combat is being expanded with new alternate fire upgrades for every weapon. Dynamic weather will now affect how the ship handles, adding another layer to storms, rogue waves and open-sea battles.

Ubisoft is adding a few lighter touches too. Players will be able to recruit either a cat or monkey to the crew, which is exactly the kind of pirate-life detail Black Flag fans are going to notice.
PS5 upgrades go beyond sharper visuals
Black Flag Resynced runs on the latest version of Ubisoft's Anvil engine, with more detailed character faces, richer animations and denser crowds. The environments across land, sea and underwater areas are being rebuilt to look more vivid and expansive.
The PS5 Pro version is getting specific attention through enhanced PSSR support and more advanced ray tracing performance. Ubisoft Singapore technical director Jussi Markkanen said the team was "extremely impressed" with the enhanced PSSR, saying it helped render the tropical world without visible upscaling artifacts while keeping image quality sharp and stable.
Ubisoft Montréal technical architect Nicolas Lopez said ray tracing is being pushed further across all modes on both PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 5 Pro. According to Lopez, PS5 brings more consistent lighting, while PS5 Pro delivers "a no-compromise experience with advanced ray tracing performance and enhanced PSSR."
The soundtrack is expanding as well, with French musician and Assassin's Creed fan Woodkid contributing new music. Ubisoft is also adding more sea shanties.
Parkour, combat and stealth are being reworked
Kenway's movement is getting a more agile parkour system, including three jumps as well as back and side ejects. Ubisoft says the goal is smoother traversal that feels tighter and flows more naturally.
Combat is also faster, with a stronger focus on combos, perfect parries and up to four chained takedowns. Some environments now include additional destructible elements, giving fights a bit more impact.
Stealth may be one of the most important practical changes for returning players. Kenway can now crouch freely, and failed tailing or eavesdropping objectives no longer trigger an instant desync. Instead, targets will react when the player is discovered, forcing the mission to continue in a messier state rather than sending players straight back to a restart.
The remake also adds new chapters and storylines in both the modern day sections and the main story. That includes a new scene with Edward's wife Caroline written by Darby McDevitt, the original game's lead writer, plus expanded arcs for crew members including Blackbeard.
New officers Lucy Baldwin, The Padre and Deadman Smith can also join the crew after players earn their trust. Each has a backstory and special abilities, with Deadman able to unlock a double shot from the Jackdaw's broadside weapons.
Ubisoft says more details will be shared in the months ahead as Assassin's Creed Black Flag Resynced moves toward its July 9 release on PS5.
