The Streets of Rage movie is still moving ahead, and Story Kitchen says more news is coming soon.

Speaking during a panel at the inaugural iicon event in Las Vegas, Story Kitchen co-founder Dmitri Johnson said the Sega beat 'em up adaptation remains part of the company's plans. According to Game File's report from the panel, Johnson stopped short of naming anyone involved, but said the next update will include some notable talent.

"I almost broke news," Johnson said while discussing the Streets of Rage movie. "There will be news," he added, soon. It'll involve some "exciting talent around that one."

Johnson also framed Streets of Rage as a long-running personal target for Story Kitchen, the production company known for its work around video game adaptations. He said Sonic the Hedgehog helped open the door with Sega, but Streets of Rage was part of the ambition from the start.

"Sonic was the gateway drug to get Streets of Rage, and we're finally making that come true," Johnson said.

The film project itself is not new. Deadline reported in 2022 that a Streets of Rage movie adaptation was in development, with John Wick creator Derek Kolstad attached to write the script and dj2 Entertainment and Escape Artists producing.

Johnson's latest comments do not confirm a cast, director, release window or studio plan. They do, however, suggest the project has not disappeared after its original development report, which matters for a Sega series that has spent most of its life as a game franchise rather than a screen property.

Streets of Rage began as a side-scrolling brawler series on Sega hardware, with players fighting through urban stages against gangs of enemies. Its modern revival, Streets of Rage 4, brought the series back in 2020 with hand-drawn art and co-op beat 'em up action.

The update also lands during a busy stretch for game-to-film adaptations, from Sega's Sonic movies to newer projects across horror, action and indie games. Gamers Now recently covered another adaptation in that wider wave, with the new Resident Evil movie teaser offering a look at Zach Cregger's Raccoon City story.

For Streets of Rage fans, the key caveat is simple: Story Kitchen is teasing news, not announcing it yet. Until that talent update arrives, the movie's next concrete details are still under wraps.
