Sony is making PlayStation online multiplayer free for one weekend, giving PS5 and PS4 owners a short window to play paid online modes without an active PlayStation Plus subscription.
The promotion runs from July 3 to July 5 and is tied to the Esports World Cup 2026. According to PlayStation's PS Plus page, players will be able to join co-op and competitive online modes during the weekend at no extra cost. The event begins just ahead of the Esports World Cup, which runs from July 6 through August 23 in Paris.
The offer only covers online multiplayer access. It does not turn non-members into full PS Plus subscribers, so players should not expect to claim Monthly Games, use the Game Catalog or get other tier benefits through the free weekend. Sony's own PS Plus overview still lists online multiplayer as a core benefit across Essential, Extra and Premium, while noting that most free-to-play games, including Fortnite, Apex Legends and Call of Duty: Warzone, do not require a membership for online play.
For anyone without a subscription, the timing gives them a weekend to revisit games they already own that usually sit behind the PS Plus online requirement. Sony has also just confirmed July's PS Plus Monthly Games, but those games are separate from this promotion and become available to members from July 7.
The free weekend arrives during a busy stretch for PlayStation service news. Sony announced this week that new PlayStation games will stop getting physical disc releases in 2028, a much bigger platform shift than a temporary multiplayer unlock. This weekend's offer is narrower, but it is useful for players who want to squad up without paying for a month of Essential first.
