Fable has slipped out of 2026. Playground Games' long-awaited reboot is now scheduled for February 2027, turning what had been one of Xbox's biggest late-year RPGs into an early 2027 release.
Xbox announced the move in a post on X, saying Fable needs room in a release calendar already stacked with major games. The company said the delay is meant to give the reboot "the dedicated moment it deserves."
Xbox points to a crowded end of 2026
According to the announcement, Xbox is trying to plan its holiday launches around a heavy slate that includes Halo: Campaign Evolved, Gears of War: E-Day, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4, Control Resonant, Star Wars: Galactic Racer and Grand Theft Auto 6.
That last name is hard to ignore. GTA 6 is currently set for November 2026, which makes it the kind of release that can pull attention away from almost anything else launching nearby. Xbox did not say Fable moved only because of Rockstar's game, but it did name-check GTA 6 while explaining the wider scheduling decision.
"In order to plan our game launches through the holidays, in a way that works best for players, we're moving Fable to February 2027 so it can have the dedicated moment it deserves."
The new date is also a reversal from the message around the game earlier this year. Fable's official Xbox page still describes it as an open-world action RPG from Playground Games and lists Xbox Series X|S, Windows 10/11, Xbox Play Anywhere and Game Pass support, but the page was still showing an Autumn 2026 release window when checked after the delay announcement.
Fable is still due at Xbox's June showcase
The delay does not mean Fable is disappearing from Xbox's summer plans. Xbox said players will get a "major new look" at the RPG during the Xbox Games Showcase on June 7, alongside a broader look at the company's lineup.
That gives Microsoft a useful reset point after months of uncertainty around the reboot's 2026 window. Recent ratings had suggested the game was moving deeper into its pre-launch cycle, but Fable's path to release now runs through a clearer, less crowded February 2027 target.
