Dragon Quest XI S: Echoes of an Elusive Age is getting a Nintendo Switch 2 version on September 24, 2026, but existing Switch owners should look closely before assuming it works like a normal upgrade. The Nintendo Store listing presents the Switch 2 release as a separate $39.99 product, with save data incompatible between the Switch and Switch 2 versions.

The same listing says the new release is only compatible with Nintendo Switch 2 and cannot be played on the original Switch. The eShop notice cited for the listing also says there are no plans to sell an upgrade pack at this time, so anyone who already bought Dragon Quest XI S on Switch is not being offered a discounted route to the Switch 2 edition.

That makes this announcement more than another date on Square Enix's anniversary calendar. Dragon Quest XI S began as the Switch's expanded definitive edition in 2019, adding features such as voice acting, orchestral music, faster battles and a 2D mode based on the 3DS version. Years later, the Switch 2 edition is being sold as its own version instead of a simple continuation of that purchase.

The Switch 2 page does not spell out every technical change included in this release. Its strongest confirmed details are the September 24 date, the $39.99 price, the Switch 2-only compatibility notice and the warning that save data does not carry between versions.

Square Enix used the wider Dragon Quest 40th anniversary stream to make several series announcements. The same event brought a new look at Dragon Quest Monsters: The Withered World and a fresh update on Dragon Quest XII: Beyond Dreams, giving the long-running RPG series a packed anniversary slate beyond this Switch 2 port.

For Dragon Quest XI S owners, the awkward part is clear: the Switch 2 edition has a date and a store page, but not a save-transfer path or upgrade-pack plan. New buyers can preorder the Switch 2 version now through Nintendo's store, while returning players will need to decide whether a separate purchase makes sense once Square Enix details what the new edition actually changes.
