Valve's new Steam Controller has already turned into a launch-day supply problem. The $99 PC controller went live on May 4, sold out within minutes according to multiple reports, and confirmed orders are now appearing on eBay with asking prices around $300 or more.

That is a sharp markup before many buyers have even received the hardware. At least one eBay listing listed as a confirmed purchase is asking roughly $330, more than three times Valve's official price. Tom's Hardware also reported that confirmed preorders were being relisted for $300 or more after the controller's Steam launch.

The resale rush follows a messy checkout window. Users reported Steam store errors and failed payment attempts as orders opened, and Downdetector showed a spike in Steam problem reports around the launch. Valve has not publicly announced a restock date or commented on whether it plans to change the buying process for future waves.

Valve's First 2026 Hardware Launch Hits a Familiar Problem

The controller was the first piece of Valve's latest hardware lineup to reach buyers after the company set a May 4 release date. It arrives ahead of Steam Machine and Steam Frame, two devices still caught up in a tougher supply and pricing situation.

That timing makes the sellout more than a minor accessory hiccup. Valve is trying to build a bigger Steam hardware ecosystem around PC libraries, handheld play and living-room setups. The controller is the most affordable entry in that lineup, which makes a fast sellout and immediate resale markup especially frustrating for Steam users who waited for launch day instead of paying scalper prices.

Valve's bigger hardware plans are already under pressure. The company recently said rising memory costs are complicating Steam Machine launch plans, even though the controller itself is not believed to be affected by the same RAM shortage. If Steam Controller stock returns quickly, this may stay a rough first wave. If restocks are slow, the controller could become another Valve device that is easier to find on reseller pages than on Steam.
