GameStop is preparing to remove reward point accrual from its Pro membership program, cutting one of the more tangible reasons some customers still pay for the retailer's annual subscription.
According to Kotaku, which reviewed an internal update sent to stores, new Pro members will stop earning Pro Points beginning July 15, 2026. Existing members who renew before then can keep earning points until August 15, 2026, when all remaining points will expire for everyone.
The change affects a program that currently costs $25 per year. Pro members have earned 20 points per dollar on qualifying purchases, equal to 2% back in rewards, alongside other benefits such as extra trade-in credit, exclusive discounts, free shipping and extended returns.
GameStop has not announced a lower membership price to go with the reported points removal. That makes the change simple for regular customers: the subscription is keeping the same annual cost while losing a benefit that directly turned purchases into future discounts.
A weaker pitch for GameStop regulars
The timing is awkward because GameStop's retail pitch has already been changing. Physical game sales no longer carry the same weight they did during the company's prime mall-store years, and many stores now lean heavily on collectibles, trading cards and accessories alongside new releases.
GameStop has also spent the past few years searching for a bigger post-meme-stock identity. Ryan Cohen's company has looked beyond traditional game retail, including its recently rejected attempt to buy eBay. That unusual eBay takeover push showed how far GameStop is trying to move from its old business model, even as store staff still have to sell memberships to walk-in customers.
Kotaku reported that some employees are already worried about how the change will land with shoppers, especially if staff are still expected to push Pro sign-ups after the points benefit disappears. The outlet also reported that GameStop did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
The practical advice for current members is straightforward. Anyone with unused Pro Points should check their balance and use them before August 15, 2026, assuming the reported internal timeline holds. After that date, the points part of GameStop Pro is expected to be gone.
